Take 5: The Bald and the Beautiful

The pesticide DDT and hunting once pushed bald eagles out of Massachusetts, but they’re back and soaring over the state in record numbers. Our Photo Contest photographers have captured stunning portraits of these birds. Here are five of our favorites.

I have been looking for a way to record my bald eagle sighting: it was in Medford MA just this past Saturday (February 14th, 2015). I was in the Whole Foods parking lot- intersection of Rte. 16/ Austin Street, Medford MA. S/He- an adult with a white head and yellow beak- flew east down the Mystic River, then flew back and sat in a tree (directly north of the lot) and ate its lunch. (It was approx. 11:30AM). I have seen eagles before- at the Quabbin Reservoir and in NH- but never around here and never so clearly. I have read that they have been seen at the Winchester (MA) lakes- but have not spotted one until this. Please share this info. It is worth the drive to try to spot it.

there was one that hung around my hometown for a few years, also at nearby Lake Quinisgamond in Worcester MA

I also saw wild nesting eagles at the elk exhbit in the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. they had to take the elk off exhbit until the eagles were done nesting
