The last cold front that moved through earlier this week resulted in 10 turtle strandings between yesterday and Tuesday, including a 90 pound loggerhead found on Crosby Beach in Brewster by volunteer Mary Myers. Brewster  continues to be the stranding hotspot with nearly half of all turtles recovered so far from beaches there.

As of today, we’ve recovered 55 turtles this fall, most of them Kemp’s ridleys and most alive. Click here to watch the latest two turtles to arrive at the sanctuary, two lively Ridley’s, both from Sesuit Harbor in Dennis.

We encountered one passerby today who found a turtle and tried to return it to the water.  For those who don’t know, cold-stunned turtles should not go back in the water. Instead, they should be placed well above the high tide line, covered with seaweed, and marked with some form of beach wrack before calling Wellfleet Bay (508-349-2615).

It appears this relatively tranquil period will end over  the week-end when a blast of really cold air is due to settle in late Saturday into Sunday. There’s even a slight chance of snow. Prepare to layer up!
