Friday morning’s Fair Weather Birding featured the haunting flute-like song of the Wood Thrush calling from the moist red maple and pine woods along the Marsh Trail.  Wood Thrushes construct nests on the ground and are declining in abundance according to Mass Audubon’s State of the Birds report.

Eastern Painted Turtle hatchling heading down to the marsh.  Great Blue Herons find them tasty snacks, so the little turtles need to move fast.  Large Snapping Turtles have been seen in the parking lot and along trails digging holes to lay their eggs.  Don’t try to move them, they will keep coming back.  Watch from a distance and you may see them actually lay and bury their eggs.
