Session 2 is Almost a Wrap plus LITs and White Mountains Trekkers

Hi there,

Just one more look at session 2 and some catching up on the LIT program and a welcome back to the White Mountains trek.

Another beautiful day here today. I saw a lot of hoodies this morning, which always means it was a good night for sleeping. There was a polar bear PBJ this morning and I hear a lot of campers showed up. The day lingered right around 80 degrees partly cloudy – really nice! We completed our IGs this morning and did our last DGs this afternoon. I got out to check in on Rockets, Kickball, Archery, and Herp Hunt, and saw some really cool stuff happening. See some images below. Highlights of the Herp Hunt were a red-backed salamander wrapped around her eggs, with young salamanders moving around inside the transparent eggs. I also saw a pearl crescent (butterfly). We caught a few frogs in the pond, saw a few salamanders and also a small tree frog – the spring peeper. Rockets are also really cool. With just a little air pressure and a little water, these 2 liter bottles travel higher than our tallest white pine trees! Kickball is always an awesome game. It’s all in the kick, and you can see some technique in the photos below! In archery, I saw some real talent including two – yes two bulls-eyes!

Right now campers are enjoying the closing campfire – full of camp songs, fun skits and more. It’s our last night together, and that is always special.

Our LITs have had an amazing first week of their two-week stay. Besides all the training they’ve been involved with and helping out with evening programs, they’ve have also done some really neat service projects both here at Wildwood and at Converse Meadows, a conservation property here in town. Yesterday I included a picture of the fire ring they built in the yurt unit, and today they surpassed all expectations by building 4 tent platforms at Converse Meadows. As you’ll see below, they carried in the lumber, and nailed together these platforms, so that this site can be used for low impact camping. I am very proud of them and the great marks they have been leaving through their efforts.

Finally, the White Mountain trekkers arrived back on camp just in time for dinner tonight. I spoke with several of them who told me the trek was “Awesome!” They climbed with Mooney Guides, who took some pictures and posted them on their site at http://www.mooneymountainguides.blogspot.com/.

Well, as I said, this session went by very quickly, and we’re sorry to see these campers go. But go they must as we’ve got more coming in on Sunday, so be sure to get here tomorrow for our closing ceremony at 10:00. 🙂

See you then! Bob
