Welcome Info for Wildwood Family Camp 3

We’re excited that we’ll see you at Family Camp soon, and we hope that you’re looking forward to your time with us. If you’ve not returned all your completed camp forms, please mail them to the Wildwood office in Lincoln, MA, immediately, or let us know that you’ll bring the completed forms with you to camp. (Don’t forget copies of your health insurance cards!) If you need a new copy of camp forms or the camp handbook, visit our website to download them. The handbook also contains a suggested packing list (p. 12) to assist you as you prepare for camp.

If you need driving directions to Wildwood, look in your camp handbook (p. 18), or get printable directions from our website. (Once you get to Rindge, NH, using a GPS or online directions is inadvisable.)

A few reminders and suggestions:

• Wildwood is a large camp, and you’ll be happiest if you wear sturdy, comfortable shoes. We ask our staff and campers to wear shoes or sandals with a heel strap (not flip flops), except at the waterfront or in the shower.

• Wildwood is a Mass Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary. For the health and safety of campers, staff, and wildlife, family pets may not be brought to Wildwood.

• For everyone’s safety, please plan not to use personal transportation like your own bikes and boats while you’re at Wildwood.

• Wildwood is a drug- and alcohol-free environment. Please do not bring alcohol or illegal drugs with you to camp or use them while at camp. Adult program participants may use tobacco products only in designated areas away from children.

• For high ropes activities, participating campers must be large enough for safety equipment to fit properly (usually age 6+).

• Camp is a great time to “unplug.” If you can, please leave electric and electronic devices at home. (Platform tents and yurts do not have electricity.) Adults who need to have cell phones should plan to turn them off or to silent/vibrate mode while participating in activities. Cell phone reception at camp is unreliable.

A sample schedule for family camp follows. You’ll receive a detailed schedule when you arrive. Activities and times are subject to change based on weather and other factors. All activities are optional, but please let us know if your family plans to leave camp or miss a meal. If you are unable to arrive at camp as scheduled on arrival day, please call the camp at 603-899-5589 to schedule an alternate arrival. If you haven’t made alternate arrival plans and don’t arrive at camp on check-in day, we’ll contact you by phone to determine when to expect your arrival.

Dillard and Abbey campers spend two nights at a nearby state park. During overnights, campers help set up and take down their tents, help with meal preparation and clean-up, hike, have a campfire, make S’mores, play games, and learn and practice Leave No Trace outdoor ethics.

Before campers depart or after they return, they’ll enjoy some time at camp at a slower pace: sleep a little later, do activities with their unit, and have time for swimming, boating, or playing together.

Sunday (Check-in Day)

2:00-3:15 pm Campers and families arrive for Check-in. If your family is new to Wildwood or needs to confer with the camp nurse, you may want to arrive near the earlier end of the time period. If you’re returning to Wildwood and don’t need much extra time before the Opening Ceremony, it’s fine to arrive near the later end of the time period.

• We’ll greet you at the parking lot entrance with a nametag and unit assignment and direct you to a parking space.

• We’ll help you take your camper’s luggage to the appropriate marked area in the parking lot. Please do not go to the living units at this time! We’ll transport your camper’s luggage to his/her unit.

• Take camper medications with you, and walk to the dining hall. Parents/guardians of children with medication/medical concerns will have a brief conference with the camp nurse. Parents whose children do not have medication or medical concerns do not need to see the nurse.

• Campers and families greet their counselors and unit leaders at the waterfront. You can also visit the camp store, set up a store account if you didn’t do so before camp, or make a purchase.

3:30 pm Opening Ceremony for everyone in the Amphitheatre. After the brief Opening Ceremony, campers and staff members walk to their living units. Families may accompany campers to their units or depart directly from the Opening Ceremony.

4:15 pm Final questions with unit leaders and family departure. Campers will unpack, settle in, begin to get to know one another, and set group goals.

Each unit enjoys a campout during the middle weekend of camp. On Wildwood’s property, Fossey and Thoreau campers spend one night at the First Point campsite, and Leopold and Carson campers spend one night at the Second Point campsite.

Welcome Information for Wildwood Session 2 and LIT B

We’re excited to see you at camp very soon, and we hope that you’re looking forward to your time at Wildwood. If you’ve not returned all your completed camp forms, please mail them to the Wildwood office in Lincoln, MA, immediately. (Don’t forget a copy of the front and back of your camper’s health insurance card!) If your camper’s prescription medications have changed since you sent the forms, it’s very important that you obtain an updated, signed medication order from the prescribing physician! If you must, let us know that you’ll bring completed forms with you to camp on July 14. If you need a new copy of camp forms or the camp handbook, please visit our website to download them. The handbook also contains a suggested packing list (p. 12) to assist you as you prepare for camp.

For driving directions to Wildwood, look in your camp handbook (p. 18), or get printable directions from our website. (Once you are in Rindge, using a GPS or online directions is inadvisable.) Wildwood is a large camp, and anyone at camp on check-in day will be happiest wearing sturdy, comfortable shoes. Remember, you may not bring family pets with you to Wildwood!

In the days before camp, please review the camp handbook, including the behavior expectations, with your camper. Make sure all items packed for camp are appropriate and well-labeled. It’s also important to keep an eye on your camper’s health. Give us a call to consult if your camper is injured, ill, or exposed to a communicable disease in the days before camp. We want every camper to arrive at camp healthy and ready to participate fully. If your camper is unable to arrive at camp as scheduled, please call the camp at 603-899-5589 to schedule an alternate arrival. If you haven’t made alternate arrival plans and your camper doesn’t arrive at camp on check-in day, we’ll contact you by phone to determine when to expect your camper’s arrival.

Amanda Packs for Camp

In my 15 years of working at camps, I’ve learned a lot about packing camp luggage, and I wanted to share some tips. As part of Wildwood’s New Camper Orientation, I demonstrated how to pack luggage for camp so that it all fits neatly in containers that close securely, will be easy to transport, and can be neatly stored in a tent or cabin. Before I unpacked, I took pictures to share with you. My luggage contains just about every single item recommended for a two-week session of camp, listed on the packing list on page 12 of the camp handbook.

Packed Luggage

I use my laundry bag to pack bulky items that will be immediately unpacked in my tent or cabin, like sheets and a pillow; a sleeping bag; towels (which store most neatly if I hang them from a rail on the bunk); and shoes (which I’ll line up under the edge of the bed). Once I’ve unpacked, I’ll hang the empty laundry bag from the rail of my bunk.

Unpacked Laundry Bag

For clothes, I use a duffle bag that I can squeeze under my bunk; however, you can also pack clothes in an old suitcase or plastic storage bin. (If you can, use what you have instead of buying something new!)

I pack loose small items, such as socks and underwear, in stuff sacks. Large plastic bags also work just fine. For kids who have a hard time keeping track of their stuff, I have seen parents pack clothes for each day in labeled bags or tape each day’s clothes together with masking tape. Sometimes it really helps to have a system!

Unpacked Duffel Bag

I pack items I’ll use all the time in my backpack. At Wildwood, every camper should carry a bag or backpack all the time. At a minimum, it should contain a water bottle, sunscreen, and a rain jacket. (A hooded sweatshirt is *not* the same as a rain jacket.)

On some days or for some activities, I might also carry a fleece jacket or sweatshirt, a hat, a bathing suit and towel, insect repellant, a book to read, or stationery to write a letter. I’ll store items packed in my backpack but not needed every day either in my duffle bag, under my pillow (like my flashlight), or stacked neatly at the end of my bed (like my extra books.)

Unpacked Backapck

At the end of camp, all the dirty laundry and linens can stay packed in the laundry bag, and all the other items can go into the duffle bag and backpack for the trip home.

It took me about 40 minutes to gather all my belongings and pack them into my bags…but I’ve been doing this for many years, so it might take you longer the first time, and you should plan for that. I recommend printing a copy of the packing list. It’s often helpful to collect all your belongings, spread them out on a bed or a table, and check off each item as you pack it. Campers of all ages should help with the packing process so they know what their luggage looks like and how it is packed. Put a copy of the packing checklist in the bag!

I would be happy to answer any of your packing questions!

Happy camping (and packing)!

Amanda
