Preparing for Fall with the Crops Team

_MG_3294There’s no denying it anymore: The sun is dipping beneath the horizon earlier and earlier, which means that it’s time for the crops team to start gearing up for the start of fall. For Matt Celona and his team, the priority lately has been to haul in all of the pumpkins, winter squash, and decorative gourds. Thankfully, this uncharacteristically dry summer has lowered the risk of plant disease with this winter produce.

If you’ve happened to stop by the farm stand this week, you may have noticed quite the abundance of these ready-to-be-souped squashes!

Also this week, Katarina, one our farm apprentices, provided CSA members with helpful information about how to navigate the assortment of heirloom tomatoes:

Yellow Varieties

  • Striped German: large yellow and red striped tomato with a soft and meaty texture. This tomato is sweet in flavor.
  • Yellow Brandywine: large yellow tomato with classic sweet flavor.

Green Varieties

  • Aunt Ruby’s German Green: green when ripe. Bright in flavor with acidity and a mild, sweet flavor.
  • Green Zebra: small and round, striped yellow and green tomatoes. This variety tends to be a bit more tangy in flavor and would pair well with cilantro or other zesty flavors.

Black and Purple Varieties

  • Purple Russian: plum-shaped tomato that is meaty and sweet. Ideal for sauces or salads.
  • Japanese Black Trifele: pear-shaped tomato rich with notes of chocolate.
  • Cherokee Purple: purple with brownish tones, smoky and sweet in flavor – amazing! Pairs well with sea salt and olive oil on a slice of bread.

See you in the field,
