This was a great year for wildlife and wild lands in Massachusetts because of people like you. Here, a look at the past year by the numbers. For more on the year&#8217;s accomplishments, check out our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.massaudubon.org\/about-us\/annual-report\" target=\"_blank\">Annual Report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h1>#1<\/h1>\n<p>is Mass Audubon&#8217;s ranking in number of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.massaudubon.org\/get-involved\/volunteer\" target=\"_blank\">volunteers<\/a> on the Boston Business Journal&#8217;s list of Largest Nonprofit Organizations in Massachusetts. We&#8217;ve held this honor for 2 years in a row, and have 13,600 dedicated volunteers.<\/p>\n<h1>451,755<\/h1>\n<p>people have visited our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.massaudubon.org\/get-outdoors\/wildlife-sanctuaries\" target=\"_blank\">wildlife sanctuaries<\/a> across the state\u00a0to explore and enjoy nature in these beautiful and varied landscapes.<\/p>\n<h1>120<\/h1>\n<p>snowy owls humanely captured at Logan Airport in Boston and released safely back into the wild by Norman Smith, Director of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.massaudubon.org\/get-outdoors\/wildlife-sanctuaries\/blue-hills-trailside-museum\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Hills Trailside Museum<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.massaudubon.org\/get-outdoors\/wildlife-sanctuaries\/blue-hills-trailside-museum\/snowy-owl-project\" target=\"_blank\">Snowy Owl Project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4505\" style=\"width: 595px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4505\" class=\"wp-image-4505 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.massaudubon.org\/yourgreatoutdoors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2014\/12\/snowy-e1418144729524.jpg\" alt=\"Snowy Owl by David Larson\" width=\"585\" height=\"425\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.massaudubon.org\/yourgreatoutdoors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2014\/12\/snowy-e1418144729524.jpg 585w, https:\/\/blogs.massaudubon.org\/yourgreatoutdoors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2014\/12\/snowy-e1418144729524-300x217.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 585px) 100vw, 585px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4505\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Snowy Owl by David Larson<\/p><\/div>\n<h1>88%<\/h1>\n<p>of all species of Massachusetts&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.massaudubon.org\/our-conservation-work\/wildlife-research-conservation\/sanctuary-based-inventory-monitoring\/sanctuary-odonates-monitoring\" target=\"_blank\">odonates <\/a>(dragonflies and damselflies) live on our wildlife sanctuaries. That&#8217;s 147 out of 167!<\/p>\n<h1>1,613<\/h1>\n<p>teachers from communities across Massachusetts learned and shared best practices at 106 educator training workshops.<\/p>\n<h1>334<\/h1>\n<p>acres of important <a href=\"http:\/\/www.massaudubon.org\/our-conservation-work\/land-conservation\" target=\"_blank\">land protected <\/a>by Mass Audubon this year. That&#8217;s the equivalent to the amount of energy used by 43 homes in a year!<\/p>\n<h1>37<\/h1>\n<p>feet of a long-concrete dam that was removed from Sackett Brook at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.massaudubon.org\/get-outdoors\/wildlife-sanctuaries\/canoe-meadows\" target=\"_blank\">Canoe Meadows Wildlife Sanctuary<\/a> in Pittsfield, benefiting wood turtles\u2014a threatened native species\u2014as well as other flora and fauna dependent on a free-flowing water course.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Looking ahead, in 2015 we are opening two additional wildlife sanctuaries. Richardson Brook in Western Massachusetts provides woodland habitat for larger native mammals like bobcats. Endicott is near Cape Ann and features mature woodlands, rocky outcrops and freshwater wetlands.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/web.massaudubon.org\/site\/R?i=kZvj0S1HGUSbA7vDGJuvZw\">Your year-end gift<\/a> will support other conservation projects like these in the year ahead.
