These days, however, our smallest falcon is becoming harder and harder to find and, as a result, is included as a Species of Greatest Conservation Concern in the wildlife action plans of all six New England states.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mass Audubon is expanding the grassland&nbsp;habitat&nbsp;at many wildlife sanctuaries to support kestrels and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.massaudubon.org\/our-conservation-work\/wildlife-research-conservation\/grassland-birds\">other grassland birds<\/a>. For example, just five miles from True North Ale Company (as the kestrel flies), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.massaudubon.org\/get-outdoors\/wildlife-sanctuaries\/ipswich-river\">Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary<\/a> in Topsfield&nbsp;has added additional acreage of open fields and a nest box for kestrels&nbsp;over the last few years, in the hope that more habitat will help boost the birds&#8217; numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.massaudubon.org\/yourgreatoutdoors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2021\/05\/2752Brian_Rusnica16879-2.jpg\" alt=\"American Kestrel \u00a9 Brian Rusnica\" class=\"wp-image-15693\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.massaudubon.org\/yourgreatoutdoors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2021\/05\/2752Brian_Rusnica16879-2.jpg 750w, https:\/\/blogs.massaudubon.org\/yourgreatoutdoors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2021\/05\/2752Brian_Rusnica16879-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.massaudubon.org\/yourgreatoutdoors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2021\/05\/2752Brian_Rusnica16879-2-624x416.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><figcaption>American Kestrel \u00a9 Brian Rusnica<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where to Find Kestrels and the Kestrel IPA<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.massaudubon.org\/learn\/nature-wildlife\/birds\/american-kestrels\">Kestrels<\/a> are birds of&nbsp;open fields and meadows.&nbsp;One can be seen perching on a fencepost or snag, bobbing its tail as it surveys its surrounding.&nbsp;When a good perch is not available,&nbsp;it hunts from the air, hovering in place in a technique called \u201ckiting.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps easier to find, the Kestrel American IPA will be widely available in select stores across the state (including Total Wine &amp; Spirits) as well as several restaurants.
