Since its inception in 2015, about 188 of the attending 197&nbsp;countries&nbsp;have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/process\/the-paris-agreement\/status-of-ratification\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ratified the agreement<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last\u00a0week, however, the United States officially became the first country to exit the Paris Agreement.\u00a0While\u00a0the\u00a0withdrawal process\u00a0began\u00a0one year ago, the exit became finalized on November 4, 2020.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our Role in Greenhouse Gas Emissions\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason this withdrawal is so concerning is&nbsp;related to the&nbsp;United States\u2019&nbsp;enormous&nbsp;contribution&nbsp;to global greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) \u2013 the root cause of climate change and its byproduct, global temperature rise.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wri.org\/blog\/2014\/11\/6-graphs-explain-world-s-top-10-emitters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Between 1850 and 2011<\/a>,&nbsp;our&nbsp;country was responsible for the largest portion of total greenhouse gas emissions compared to every other nation in the world.&nbsp;Even today,&nbsp;the United States continues to be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wri.org\/blog\/2014\/11\/6-graphs-explain-world-s-top-10-emitters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the second largest GHG emitter<\/a>&nbsp;worldwide.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This global nature of GHGs is part of the reason why international collective action is so important. No&nbsp;matter where&nbsp;we&nbsp;are,&nbsp;our combined&nbsp;emissions contribute to the global phenomenon of climate change.&nbsp;Even more&nbsp;significant,&nbsp;just&nbsp;a few nations are responsible for a majority of these emissions,&nbsp;which then impact the entire&nbsp;planet.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Collective Climate Action Isn\u2019t Over\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the\u00a0US\u00a0has formally withdrawn from the Paris Agreement,\u00a0much of the\u00a0country\u00a0is still committed to reaching these international targets.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usclimatealliance.org\/governors-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Including Massachusetts.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We know that to fight climate change and protect the natural and human communities we\u00a0love,\u00a0we have to\u00a0act\u00a0boldly and urgently. Massachusetts is dedicated to reaching net zero emissions by 2050. This means that\u00a0statewide, through a combination of reducing emissions and\u00a0improving\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.massaudubon.org\/valueofnature\" target=\"_blank\">nature-based solutions<\/a>,\u00a0we,\u00a0as a state,\u00a0will not emit\u00a0more GHGs than what we\u00a0can soak back up and remove\u00a0from\u00a0the atmosphere.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And here at Mass Audubon,&nbsp;we know when we work together, we can&nbsp;make an&nbsp;impact.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where\u00a0We Go from Here\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There is still an opportunity for the United States&nbsp;to rejoin the Paris Agreement as soon as February 2021.&nbsp;There are also&nbsp;steps that we can all take to&nbsp;keep the momentum going on climate action.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/secure2.convio.net\/mas\/site\/Advocacy?cmd=display&amp;page=UserAction&amp;id=135\" target=\"_blank\">write to your elected official<\/a>, urging them to continue to support clean, equitable climate legislation.\u00a0You can\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wearestillin.com\/how-can-individuals-get-involved\" target=\"_blank\">make sure your community and local organizations<\/a>\u00a0(like schools) are committed to the nation-wide pledge\u00a0dedicated to achieving the Paris Agreement\u2019s\u00a0goals.\u00a0You\u00a0can support community programs, like\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenenergyconsumers.org\/aggregation\" target=\"_blank\">green municipal aggregation<\/a>,\u00a0which \u201cgreens\u201d community electricity supply. You can talk about climate change\u00a0with your friends and family to inspire hope and dedication to climate action (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.climatecrew.org\/the_fundamentals_of_communicating_about_climate_change_event\" target=\"_blank\">here\u2019s an upcoming webinar\u00a0to learn more<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use your voice, get active in your community, and inspire the people around you to make change.
