When she announced early on in 2012 that she was planning on stepping down, we got to thinking about all the she helped the organization accomplish under her helm.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, when Mass Audubon staff members gathered together for our annual staff meeting, we got the opportunity to share some of those accomplishments. Here are just a few highlights:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Opening of an additional 16 <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.massaudubon.org\/Nature_Connection\/sanctuaries.php\" target=\"_blank\">wildlife sanctuaries<\/a><\/strong> across the state.<\/li>\n<li>Protecting huge tracts of land! More than 10,000 acres of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.massaudubon.org\/Nature_Connection\/landprotection\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\">land protected<\/a><\/strong> across the Commonwealth.<\/li>\n<li>Making Mass Audubon more <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.massaudubon.org\/Nature_Connection\/accessibility.php\" target=\"_blank\">accessible<\/a><\/strong> for all to enjoy with universally accessible public facilities at most of our staffed wildlife sanctuaries and many fully accessible and multisensory trails.<\/li>\n<li>Completing the <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.massaudubon.org\/StateoftheBirds\/\" target=\"_blank\">State of the Birds<\/a><\/em><\/strong> report, a comprehensive overview of the status of all of our breeding and wintering bird species, thereby laying the foundation for a reevaluation of the Commonwealth\u2019s bird conservation strategy.<\/li>\n<li>Supporting four urban environmental education centers engaging over 49,000 participants annually from underserved populations across the state.<\/li>\n<li>Initiation and implementation of the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.massaudubon.org\/Birds_and_Birding\/IBAs\/\" target=\"_blank\">Important Bird Areas (IBA) Program<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>$140 Million raised to protect the nature of Massachusetts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Thank you Laura, for all you have done for Mass Audubon, Massachusetts, and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>Read more about Laura\u2019s experience with Mass Audubon in a <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/lifestyle\/style\/2012\/12\/26\/mass-audubon-president-moves\/VINpmUuOpB53S0hJHGFn5J\/story.html?s_campaign=sm_tw\" target=\"_blank\">Boston Globe<\/a><\/strong><\/em> Q&amp;A as well as an article in the <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/boston\/print-edition\/2012\/09\/21\/mass-audubon-president-to-end-tenure.html\" target=\"_blank\">Boston Business Journal<\/a><\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\"><em>Photo: Laura, left, with Broadmoor Wildlife Sanctuary Director Elissa Landre\u00a0Massachusetts State Senator Karen Spilka, and\u00a0Governor Deval Patrick.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After 14 wonderful years, this is Laura Johnson\u2019s last day as Mass Audubon\u2019s president.
