{"id":14542,"date":"2020-08-12T16:15:24","date_gmt":"2020-08-12T20:15:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.massaudubon.org\/yourgreatoutdoors\/?p=14542"},"modified":"2020-08-12T16:32:13","modified_gmt":"2020-08-12T20:32:13","slug":"a-victory-for-birds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.massaudubon.org\/yourgreatoutdoors\/a-victory-for-birds\/","title":{"rendered":"A Victory for Birds"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Great news for birds and for all of us who care about them!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.massaudubon.org\/yourgreatoutdoors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2020\/08\/5696John_Yurka750-1.jpg\" alt=\"Great Blue Heron copyright John Yurka\" class=\"wp-image-14544\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.massaudubon.org\/yourgreatoutdoors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2020\/08\/5696John_Yurka750-1.jpg 750w, https:\/\/blogs.massaudubon.org\/yourgreatoutdoors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2020\/08\/5696John_Yurka750-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.massaudubon.org\/yourgreatoutdoors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2020\/08\/5696John_Yurka750-1-624x416.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><figcaption>Great Blue Heron \u00a9 John Yurka<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A federal court <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.massaudubon.org\/yourgreatoutdoors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2020\/08\/2020-08-11_mbta_decision.pdf\">ruled yesterday<\/a> that the legal basis for the Trump Administration\u2019s rollback of the century-old Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA) is inconsistent with the intent and language of the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>U.S. District Court Judge Valerie Caproni found that the Administration\u2019s legal opinion, which would needlessly put millions of birds at risk, \u201cruns counter to the purpose of the MBTA to protect migratory bird populations\u201d and is \u201ccontrary to the plain meaning of the MBTA.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As many Mass Audubon members know, the MBTA\u2019s passage in 1918 was a direct outgrowth of the advocacy spurred by Harriet Hemenway and Minna Hall, who more than two decades earlier had founded the Massachusetts Audubon Society to end the slaughter of birds for their feathers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is heartening to know our founders\u2019 legacy lives on in the actions and support by nature lovers that continue to inspire today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The court\u2019s decision comes as a result of lawsuits filed by environmental organizations and eight states, including Massachusetts; we specifically thank Attorney General Maura Healey and her staff for their stalwart determination to help bring about the ruling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be sure, this fight is not over.
