{"id":14409,"date":"2020-07-15T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-07-15T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.massaudubon.org\/yourgreatoutdoors\/?p=14409"},"modified":"2020-07-16T15:34:41","modified_gmt":"2020-07-16T19:34:41","slug":"heat-and-air-quality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.massaudubon.org\/yourgreatoutdoors\/heat-and-air-quality\/","title":{"rendered":"There\u2019s more to Summertime than Heat"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>You can\u2019t&nbsp;miss&nbsp;the telltale sign of summertime: that&nbsp;classic&nbsp;spike in&nbsp;heat.&nbsp;We\u2019re all&nbsp;probably feeling a little&nbsp;sweatier&nbsp;than usual, but&nbsp;the&nbsp;heat is more than just uncomfortable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s because temperature is directly linked to air quality&nbsp;and our health&nbsp;\u2013 and climate change&nbsp;aggravates&nbsp;that&nbsp;link.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.massaudubon.org\/yourgreatoutdoors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2020\/07\/pollution-4001554_1920.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14412\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.massaudubon.org\/yourgreatoutdoors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2020\/07\/pollution-4001554_1920.jpg 750w, https:\/\/blogs.massaudubon.org\/yourgreatoutdoors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2020\/07\/pollution-4001554_1920-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.massaudubon.org\/yourgreatoutdoors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2020\/07\/pollution-4001554_1920-624x416.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Basics of Air Pollution&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ozone&nbsp;is what we more commonly refer to as smog.&nbsp;Particle matter<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>(PM) is a combination of incredibly small solids and liquids in the air that can get trapped in our lungs or bloodstream. Both of these pollution sources are directly associated with increased rates of asthma attacks, heart damage, lung cancer, dementia, and even pregnancy risks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">State of the Air&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The American Lung Association (ALA) recently released their 2020 \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.stateoftheair.org\/key-findings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">State of the Air<\/a>\u201d report, which details that nearly half of all Americans live in counties with poor air quality. The report also finds that eight of the Commonwealth\u2019s reporting counties demonstrated more unhealthy days of ozone levels compared to last year\u2019s report. These counties are Barnstable, Bristol, Essex, Middlesex, Norfolk, Plymouth, Suffolk, and Worcester.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">One of the&nbsp;Culprits&nbsp;is Climate Change&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sources that&nbsp;spew greenhouse gasses, like cars and power plants,&nbsp;also spit out PM and ozone.&nbsp;As climate change continues to bring higher daily average temperatures,&nbsp;air pollution like&nbsp;ozone&nbsp;increases.&nbsp;In fact, the three years studied in ALA\u2019s most recent report (2016-2018) comprise three out of the five&nbsp;hottest&nbsp;years in the United States, correlating with both climate change\u2019s&nbsp;warming&nbsp;effects and the report\u2019s findings of increased unhealthy days of ozone levels.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Differences in Impact&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We all don\u2019t feel climate change\u2019s impacts on air quality the same.&nbsp;Certain&nbsp;vulnerable&nbsp;populations, such as&nbsp;people of color (especially Black Americans)&nbsp;and low socioeconomic status communities,&nbsp;have shown to&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.massaudubon.org\/yourgreatoutdoors\/climate-action-benefits-health\/\" target=\"_blank\">suffer disproportionately<\/a>&nbsp;from&nbsp;public health impacts like increased air pollution.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2767260?utm_source=For_The_Media&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=ftm_links&amp;utm_term=061820\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A recent&nbsp;systematic review&nbsp;<\/a>makes this link&nbsp;even more&nbsp;clear.&nbsp;The review\u2019s research team examined&nbsp;over 32 million&nbsp;U.S.&nbsp;births&nbsp;and&nbsp;found a&nbsp;direct connection&nbsp;between exposure to extreme levels&nbsp;of heat,&nbsp;air pollution,&nbsp;and pregnancy&nbsp;risks&nbsp;like&nbsp;underweight or stillborn babies.&nbsp;But&nbsp;they also found that&nbsp;Black&nbsp;mothers&nbsp;and babies across the&nbsp;country&nbsp;suffered these risks at a much higher rate&nbsp;than the rest of the population.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Breathe Easy,&nbsp;We&nbsp;Can Help&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Albeit in different ways, climate change affects every one of us.
