What To Do This Weekend: April 9-10

Celebrate 100 Years of Wildlife Sanctuaries this Saturday at sanctuaries across the state. Find out what each sanctuary has planned for the day plus find additional weekend activities below.


Greater Boston

Sanctuaries 100th Day Celebration: Go on a naturalist walk at Drumlin Farm in Lincoln, search for birds and insects at Habitat in Belmont, learn about this history of the Blue Hills at the Trailside Museum in Milton, check out fantastic photos of the caterpillars at the Museum of American Bird Art in Canton, and enjoy a guided walk at the Boston Nature Center in Mattapan. Fill out an online ticket for free admission.

Witness spectacular aerial displays of American woodcocks at Blue Hills Trailside Museum in Milton, Boston Nature Center in Mattapan, and Broadmoor in Natick.  (registration required)

Find out how to celebrate Earth Day Every Day at Boston Nature Center. We”ll take a nature walk and collect trash along the way; we’ll talk about how “green” we are and creating some recycled art. Come enjoy the earth at a beautiful green sanctuary in the city!

Sanctuaries 100th Day Celebration: Head to the top of Bradstreet Hill at Ipswich River in Topsfield to learn about nest boxes, tree swallows, and eastern bluebirds and get your nature questions answered during Joppa Flats‘ Ask a Naturalist series in Newburyport. Fill out an online ticket for free admission.

Explore Parker River National Wildlife Refuge in search of ducks, geese, and swans as part of Ducks, Cider, and Donuts . We’ll keep minds and bodies active with group games that compare humans to birds for flight speed, flapping rates, and senses. Donuts and cider will be provided. No dabbling required. Sanctuaries 100th Day Celebration: Check out the osprey nests at Allens Pond in Dartmouth/Westport, go on a guided walk on the Billings Loop at Moose Hill in Sharon, enjoy a live animal presentation at Oak Knoll in Attleboro, and take a wetland walk at Stony Brook in Norfolk, and celebrate with cookies and lemonade at North River in Marshfield. Fill out an online ticket for free admission.

Get excited for Amphibians After Dark, an outdoor amphibian adventure at Stony Brook in Norfolk! Tour the lantern-lit trails with a guided group and encounter costumed characters waiting to teach you about amphibians through their stories and songs. (Families, registration required)

During Vernal Pool After Hours at Moose Hill in Sharon, take a night walk to our most prominent vernal pools to listen to and see what might be happening. (Adults, registration required)

Sanctuaries 100th Day Celebration: Search for ducks and gulls at Long Pasture in Barnstable, dissect an owl pellet and search for aquatic animals at Wellfleet Bay in Wellfleet, and go on a family quest at Felix Neck in Edgartown. Fill out an online ticket for free admission.

Go on Vernal Astronomy Adventure of the Springtime Skies at Long Pasture in Barnstable. Get tips for outdoor stargazing using the unaided eye, binoculars, and small telescopes. Star charts and warm drinks will be provided. (Adults and children ages 10+, registration required)
