The Seasons are Turning, Turning, Turning

Perhaps more than most people, farmers have a keen sense of the changing seasons. The sun doesn’t rise until after 6am now, and Matt Celona, Crops Manager, and his team are soon going to have to push their start time a little later. This could be a blessing and a curse, as the crew is in the thick of harvest season, picking tomatoes, potatoes, melons, eggplants, and string beans. Good news for CSA members and farm stand goers: Kale and chard are looking fantastic right now.

Killdeer

About 15 or so killdeer have been feasting on upturned worms and bus as we make seed beds. They hatched this past spring, and as soon as the fall comes, they’ll head south with the swallows. If you visit the farm in the late afternoon, keep an eye to the sky for hundreds of swallows circling above the small pasture between the Crossroads Barn and the wash station. They’re likely building up strength for the upcoming migration!

We’re very excited for tonight’s Artistry on the Green dinner, where Matt and our Development Director Polly Reeve will share the latest Drumlin Farm insights. Chefs Brian Miller and Ben Tyson toured the fields earlier this month so they could craft a menu that truly catered to our freshest produce. Have you ever had charred potato ice cream? Believe us, the menu speaks for itself. There are still some seats left tonight, so give them a call!

See you in the field,
Your farmers
