Springing From the Ground

What’s coming up at Broadmoor?  Lots!  Flowers, leaf out and concrete.

Concrete is being poured into forms for the new north entrance to the nature center.  The entry will be directly to the classrooms on the lower floor.

Sassafras trees are uncurling their three different kinds of leaves:  one looks like a mitten, another like a trident and a third is a “typical” oval shaped leaf, all on the same tree.

Visitors ask about the sweet fragrance along the trails.  That’s multiflora (many flowered) rose.   These non-native shrubs were widely planted in the 1960s for their wildlife value,  the fruits, small red rose hips are eaten by birds and small mammals.  Unfortunately,  the plants spread fast and take over.  Now wildlife managers are trying to control the plants they introduced decades ago.
